I’m almost a week past my last race so I’m excited to provide another update. It was a clean win on Saturday and a hard-fought P2 on Sunday with tires as a factor.
Saturday was a win by the book. We put the car on a comfortable pole position by 0.7 seconds with some of my best driving yet. I went on to build a 10sec gap in the opening laps of the race by navigating the traffic quickly. From there we matched P2’s pace to maintain the lead and took home first place with no troubles.
Sunday was the greatest challenge I’ve had yet. There was intense wheel to wheel racing and the pressure didn’t let up for even a second. The day started with a very close qualifying. With 5 minutes left in the session my pole time was bested leaving me 2 laps to find half a second. I dug deep and managed to take P1 back by 0.15 seconds at the end of the session.
We decided to take a gamble with the tires in race 2. We used the same set of four tires as before while the competition stickered up with two fresh rears.
It almost worked, but turned out to be the wrong call as I ended up with a traction deficit in the closing stages of the race. The final 5 laps had some of the hardest, closest racing I’ve experienced yet with several lead changes. I gave everything I had, but he got by me on the back straight on the last lap. I tried to hit back with late brakes around the outside, yet couldn’t quite make it stick. He ran me out of road and that was the race.
In the end it was still a good week with lots of top notch racing. Helps make the lost win hurt a little less.
As the points currently stand, I’m leading the championship with 6 races left on the schedule. I need help, however, to close out my championship run. Currently I don’t have the season budget left to race at one of the next two events and at the double points finale in Salt Lake City, Utah.
