World Speed Motorsports announced today that they will be bringing two entries into the tenth edition of the Super Trofeo North America in 2023. The first event gets underway in May at Laguna Seca where the team has won countless times in formula cars. The World Speed announcement marks a return to the IMSA paddock  for the successful open-wheel racing team.  The team has won the Star Mazda Championship under the IMSA banner and has had multiple successes in sports cars, however, this is the first time in the team’s 32-year history that it will be committing to supporting a multi-car  effort in one of IMSA’s top series.

“We have always loved running with IMSA, from Star to GT3-Cup and IMSA Lites,” said World Speed Team Principal  Telo Stewart. “It will be great to be in the Super Trofeo. We have had our eyes on it for a couple of years. We think it is a good fit for our team, and many of our current drivers.”

The team will be managed by current Operations Manager, Jan Trojan. He has been with the team since 2005, and has been an influential part of every championship World Speed has secured since, including multiple F4 and F3 Championships in recent years. He was instrumental in identifying the Super Trofeo championship as a fit for the team. “I am looking forward to this program,” noted Trojan, “It will be an opportunity for us to implement a new program from the ground-up.”

World Speed team drivers, Sean Prewett and Dan Decker, will be the first two of four drivers. Co-drivers, car numbers, and sponsors will be announced early in the 2023 season. Both drivers came up through World Speed’s driver development program and also had previous racing experience. World Speed’s training, which is also used by the VMB Driver Development program, has graduated many drivers into the IMSA ranks. Recently, three graduates were selected for the 2022 IMSA Diverse Driver Development Scholarship, and World Speed graduate Jaden Conwright secured the seat.

The 2023 schedule opens at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca from May 12-14. Rounds to follow will be at Watkins Glen International (June 22-25), Road America (Aug. 4-6), and VIRginia International Raceway (Aug. 25-27) before the series heads to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course from Sept. 15-17 as part of the IMSA Battle on the Bricks weekend.

The final round in the North American championship will take place at the World Finals circuit, which is expected to be in November in Italy. The World Finals pairing the North American and European series drivers and teams will follow.

Lamborghini Super Trofeo features four classes of competition, with all teams running the identical Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo Evo2 cars that debuted this year. The 2022 season witnessed record fields with 36 entries.
