This past weekend at Thunderhill Raceway Park World Speed Motorsports competed in the first endurance race of their 18 year history. “A four hour race is about eight times longer than our usual sprint race,” noted Team Owner Telo Stewart. “We kept busy shuffling strategy, and when the first yellow came in we served one of our first mandatory stops. This along with the rock steady driving, and fast pit stops put us in a position to win our race class, and the event overall.”
The car was driven by WSM drivers Renny Damon, and Vince Gaddini who also competed in the Group 2 race. This was the final Formula Atlantic race of the season, and Gaddini was also able to secure the 2009 SFR SCCA Formula Atlantic championship. Damon finished second in the FS points for the 2009 season; his first year competing in the class.
“Renny and Vince drove really well all weekend, and the results speak for themselves,” added Stewart. “The crew spent countless hours over the past few weeks in preparation for this event, and the hard work really paid off. Everyone on the team is looking forward to the next endurance event.”
The winning car is a custom sports racer based on a Renesis powered Pro Formula Mazda. It has paddle shifting, auto blip, tunnels, dry brake refueling, on board fuel guage, F1 style top exit exhaust, and a host of other updates that make the car competitive in an endurance environment. The car was designed to win on Goodyear Eagle Racing Radials.
The team is now preparing multiple cars for the Molecule Formula Mazda Challenge race at Infineon Raceway on November 7th.
