Carrio Takes a Track Record and Top Ten at Pikes Peak

July 2, 2005
Colorado Springs, Colorado

Adrian (Ace) Carrio at his first oval race ever impressed everyone in attendance this past weekend at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado Springs during round five of the Star Mazda Series presented by Goodyear. He turned a time early in the first practice which stands as the current track record. Carrio started the race fourth after having tangled with a bit of weather that came over the track at the end of single car qualifying. In the race Carrio had a good start and quickly moved up to third place, where he ran for a good portion of the race. He ran there battling Graham Rahall for the third place before having to give up track position to safely navigate lapped traffic to bring the car home with seventh place points.

Carrio’s times sat at the top of every time sheet throughout practice. “The World Speed Motorsports / Rockford Fosgate car was working well right off of the trailer,” stated Carrio, “we knew we had a fast car and just needed to fine tune it for the 75 lap race.” Carrio ran well in the race despite loosing precious track position first while passing a lapped car which had opted to stay on line as the leaders came by. Later, on the second to last restart Carrio was able to get on the gas early as he headed for turn one in the middle of a multi car pack that was at least three wide, however, when it came time to turn in he found himself boxed in and had to allow a few cars by before getting in line in seventh place. Carrio showed that he was faster than the cars in front of him by repeatedly getting runs on them and working on setting them up to pass but a final yellow flag late in the race prevented him from being able to cash in on his speed and he had to settle for taking home valuable seventh place points.

“The entire team knew that Ace had the speed to put the car up front this weekend,” said World Speed Motorsports team owner Telo Stewart, “It was especially encouraging to have set the track record with a time that was a half second faster than anyone in practice but oval racing is tough and we are glad to leave here with some good points.” In addition to the usual team and family at the track supporting Carrio, there were over 120 additional friends, family, and fans in attendance to support the 16 year old in his home town. “We had a lot of moral support this weekend,” said Glen Carrio, Ace’s father, “it is special to be able to race in your home town and have so many people out rooting for the team.” The team now heads for their home track of Infineon Raceway in Sonoma California for round six and seven of the Star Mazda Series.
